Cut is the one human element of the 4C’s that does not only refer to the shape of the diamond but to its proportions. A well-proportioned diamond will unleash its maximum fire and brilliance. Diamonds cut too deep or too shallow lose light through the sides or bottom, producing less brilliance and value.
Clarity is the amount, size, color, type and location of blemishes found on the surface of a polished diamond and inclusions found inside the diamond. The more closely a diamond approaches flawlessness, the greater its clarity and more rare, brilliant and valuable it will be.
Color refers to the degree to which a diamond approaches near colorless. The Gemological Institute of America has created a scale to measure diamond color- ranging from D-F (colorless), very rare- G-J (near colorless), most common- K-M (fairly tainted), common N-R (very light yellow) and S-Z (light yellow). The more colorful diamonds are graded Z and higher. Since tone and tint can be very subtle, allow a Grafner’s expertise to select a color that is more appealing to you.
Carat refers to the weight/size of a diamond. A carat is measured in increments called points. One carat is equal to 100 points. Carat is the easiest of the 4C’s to determine, due to the fact it is measured on a diamond scale. While larger diamonds are rare and desirable, two stones of equal caratage can have very different values depending on other qualities. Small differences in weight can have a dramatic affect on the prices. The larger the size, all other diamond characteristics are enhanced.
